Meryl Streep Blog Article

I Met Meryl.

There are some perks to this job. You get to eat the odd fancy dinner in some fancy places/palaces, and you get to meet some fancy folks. Over the years I’ve met Kings and Queens (I once danced to Dancing Queen in a nightclub with the Queen of Sweden), I’ve met three Prime Ministers, Oscar, Grammy, Bafta and Turner prize winning muso’s, actors, directors, artists etc. I’ve met lots of interesting people. Last week, I was at St James’ Palace for the Kings Foundation Awards, in a cosy room chatting with long time fellow Kings Foundation Ambassador Alan Titchmarsh about his writer’s block, when casual as you like, in walks Meryl Streep, and I was genuinely starstruck.

I am delighted to report that Meryl Streep is really great. We discussed 'Limits To Growth', an extraordinary book published in 1972 that gave a very clear and very stark warning about the impending environmental and human catastrophe that awaited us all if we didn’t slow down our consumption and eliminate our polluting ways. Meryl was a student in New York when the book first came out and she told me she bought 50 copies and gave them to all her friends. 53 years later not only have we not limited our growth, it has increased tenfold causing ever greater environmental damage, and widening the gap between the have lots and the have nots.

At Community Clothing we preach (and practice) practice a philosophy of buy less, buy better, make local. You can find out lots more in our ‘How We Work’ section of the website, or you can read or listen to my book Less. It’s a philosophy which chimes with that of the Kings Foundation, and it is one that, I am proud to say, has the approval of the wonderful MeryllStreep.
